Is 'LittleBigPlanet' the PS3's killer app?

Every game platform has its flagship. For Nintendo, it's anything Mario. For the Xbox, it's all things "Halo." Can "LittleBigPlanet" be that game to the third-place PlayStation 3 platform? Sony hopes so. And actually, so do I.

"LittleBigPlanet" is a new platformer game for the PlayStation 3. In it, you'll journey around a planet — a little big planet — that looks an awful lot like ours, but in some surreal parallel universe where cars are made of cardboard and meerkats can be used as trampolines. In it, you'll run, jump and collect goodies in levels that are easily identifiable as a real-life place, but in a Salvador-Dali-meets-Tim-Burton way. Somehow, it works.

At least we think it does. msnbc.com wants to know what you think about Sony's 'LittleBigPlanet.'

This game is the #2 reason I picked the PS3 over the XBOX360.

The #1 reason was that Microsoft is a big, stinky company that makes terrible products and holds back the entire computer industry.

There are good reasons to take a PS3 over a 360, but none of yours are any good. You could have just said it has a blue ray player(only real advantage) and I would have agreed. Personally I prefer the 360 to the PS3, but whatever floats your boat. Pick your product based on how good it actually is not what company made it. That goes for the computer world to, if you think Vista is horrible(and it is actually pretty good) buy a mac or use Linux. I think this game looks lame, but I will withhold finale judgment until I play it.

There is one reason that this game is being tagged as the "killer app": That is what Sony meant for it to be.  The game, after X time being developed, went from off the radar to "On the Cover of OPXM:  Why This Will Be Game of the Year", because quite honestly, besides MGS4, the PS3 has nothing.  Nothing that can't be gotten elsewhere.   So let the hype machines weave their song of terror.

Yes, it looks charming and innovative.  Is it the reason that you should be buying a 400 dollar high-definition DVD player?

God can hope not.  Seinfeld still looks good on your old Xbox 360.

Based on the hype,  I'll get this game when it comes to Xbox 360 or Wii, but not interested in buying another console for this game.

There are other user generated content games nearing the market as well.

uhm, actually the 360 is outselling the ps3 in japan. PS3 is considered a failure this generation and this game wont do anything to change that.

I would like my own personal Sackboy to carry around with me - they are adorable!  This is a game that both my "casual gamer" (at best) friend, and our serious gamer/game-reviewer husbands are excited about.  There aren't many major games that can offer something for absolutely everyone.  The work they have done on it is simply amazing.

It looks so interesting. People are making working calculators in it!

The level is said to use 610 magnetic switches, 500 wires, and 430 pistons. I didn't see what the big deal was until the camera panned up. That's when my mouth hit the floor.

I was on the fence with this game, until I played in the beta.  I thought this game was going to be a kid game, which I got into the beta to have my 4 year old son be able to play it.  And I found myself wanting to create levels for him to play in.  You know, make it customizible for him, put things in there that he would like.  It's even fun just to play other user created levels with him.  And then I found myself playing it without him (he would be mad if he knew that!).

This game is great for all people!

It seems as though the review of this game is more about why you should by a PS3. The actual review of the game discusses the pros and very little of the cons.

The game looks gorgeous and it's very intuitive in it's user creation abilities, but ultimately, it looks extremely tedious to play as a game.  I will admit I'm not really one for games that the primary content is developed by users - but I do understand that there is a market for it.

The difference is for me is that I can play StarCraft, Super Smash Brothers and Unreal Tournament (where user creation a huge part of the game) and just enjoy the game itself, where as the LBP gameplay experience is not enticing at all.  Even watching developers play it and miss platforms 3-4 times in a row - just to die and do it all over again, just doesn't look fun at all - or worth playing in general.

The largest comparison I can give to this game is a Rubix's cube.  Rubix cube is intiutive and challenging, but at the end of the day, I'd rather just play something less tedious and more entertaining.  But, I'll never deny that there is a large fanbase for Rubix cube - as there will be for this game.

@ John Weber - Not sure I agree man, the inflexibility with some of the movement reminds me largely of the old-school NES games (Metroid, Zelda, Mega Man) where jumping wasn't just a 'given'.  You actually had to position yourself correctly, and pull it off.  IE.  If you landed the jump, it wasn't just because you were able to hit a button, you were able to hit a button at the precise moment that the game allows for.  Seems that it follows suit with physics of the real world.  Just because you can jump, and there's a gap right there, doesn't necessarily mean you're going to make the correct jump.  Anyway, I feel it's a good thing, as opposed to a negative.

What land of gold and platinum are you from, Miss Reporter, that would allow you to write with a conceivably straight face that this video game is "a fantastic bargain for the $60 price?"  Statements that might have worked in its place would be that the game is "worth the $60 price," that the game is "not overpriced," or that "the replay value exceeds the game's $60 price tag."  Surely, no video game is a "fantastic bargain" at sixty dollars.  I have not, nor has anyone I have ever known, smirked at the thought of sneaking one by 'ole _______(insert game company here) while handing over three Jacksons to the clerk behind the proverbial counter.

I have both the Xbox 360 and the PS3.  The PS3 is used as a Blu-Ray player and for exclusive games that I find worth buying.  To date, I have only one PS3 game while I have over 40 Xbox 360 games.  I'm thinking of getting this game as I think my son and my daughter will like it (I probably will also).  And I may get the new Resistance 2 as well.  But, all games released on all consoles I still only get for the Xbox 360, it's just a better console.  The PS3 is a Blu-Ray player that can also be used to play a few of it's unique games, like this one.

i had the oppurtunity to play little big planet via the beta version last week. after watching all of the previews, etc. i could tell the game was going to be really fun, but it exceeded my expectations. some may consider the game 'monotonous', but no more so than any of the mario brothers games. with little big planet you can make every level different. a huge plus is that if you have the eye camera you can add your own pictures to the game. i had also read that if you have pictures/images stored on the hard drive (of your ps3), that you could use those as well. i have had my pre-order placed for months, and was so bummed when they recalled/postponed the release. especially after i read that a some walmart and target stores were selling the game because apparently they were unaware of the recall.  argh...

Like all things, they were "his" opinion.

On a much brighter note, LBP actually "is a good game", but not a killer app. I don't know what the difference between this and any other game, but it offers diverse content and usergenerated ones at that. For game creating nerds like myself, this was a steal! I love to create levels and put them out for people to judge, heart, and play again. It's a rewarding feeling. AND -- Sony doesn't make you pay for the online service. It's like the YouTube of video games. So if you and 3 other friends want to get together on the same console and just surf the channels of LBP, play a game, and laugh your heads off in the comedy section, or get terrified in the 'scary' ones, this is a must have for those types of situations! Oh, AND it's fun. :)
