Post-election Internet goes to the dogs

The e-mails started around 8:30 a.m. Nov. 5, the morning after Barack Obama's presidential election, or more importantly, his victory speech. I'm just surprised my in box didn't start filling up the night before, say 4 minutes, 35 seconds into Obama's speech when he broached what, for a whole lot of cyber dwellers, is the most important implication of his historic win.

No, not the economy. Not peace in the Middle East. Not gay marriage. Not that-other-really-important-thing-I'd-know-about-if-I kept-up-on-current events. More than any other aspect of this new leadership, American Netizens are positively apoplectic over the future First Puppy.

msnbc.com wants to know what you think. What kind of puppy should the Obamas adopt?

If the children want a puppy let them have a puppy. All kids want a puppy. Let's not be joykills, okay? Bush has a biting Scottie and no one complained about having our taxing paying money  grooming, feeding and hiring handlers to walk that pooch. Let's get real people. Let Obama's kids have a puppy.

Boy are you self-centered.  Two little girls can't have a puppy because you're a selfish bastard?  Almost every president has had a dog and I'm pretty sure it hasn't taken anything away from the way they ran the country.  Look at FDR, now considered one of the greatest presidents of all time.  He had a little Scottish Terrier named Fala and he ran this country right out of a depression.  So don't be a dick.  If two little girls want a puppy, let them have a puppy.  F**king scrooge...

First of all, this getting a dog issue is not effecting him running the country.  He is not even in office yet.  Secondly, the media and the people pick up on something and run with it. That is what they did with Clinton, etc... the people tend to  help stop progress.

On to important things: dogs.  I would love to see him get a mutt from a shelter because the shelters are overrun but he will be setting a good example and more shelter dogs will be adopted.

It has been proven that children who have pets have raise empathy, intelligence and a sense of responsibility.  It is important to have animals and pets in our lives.

And a true dog lover. It says a lot about you when you own a dog and care for animals.

The Obama family should consider Wirehair Dachshund standard size – about 26-28 pounds. Great dogs.

(Front Donna's site: ) Did You Know?

The Dachshund was developed in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers (dachs, badgers; hund, dog). From 1930 to 1940, Dachshunds advanced from 28th to sixth rank among American registrations, and maintained this average rank through World War II by constructive public relations.

Dachshunds are bred with three coat varieties: (1) Smooth, (2) Long, and (3) Wirehaired, and is shown in two sizes: standard and miniature.

Dachshunds are accomplished hunting dogs despite their lapdog reputations.

In the postwar years, to avoid associations with Germany, the Dachshund's name was temporarily translated to "badger dog."

If they want a puppy, let them have a puppy!  It it unreasonable to think that it's such a big deal that it's coming out of tax payers money.  True though it is, it's fractions upon fractions of pennies that we pay.
As to what kind of dog he should get, I think it should defiantly not be a little lap dog.  He is the future president and deserves a manly, strong dog, not some pansy yuppie puppy.  Thus, I think that Great Dane is the best choice although lab would also be good.

The girls should have whatever type of puppy they want.

Dogs provide wonderful therapy. Most Presidents have had a pet.

Sounds like this "taxpayer" should worry more about his/her own sad bitter life & attitude before taking time or energy or anger out on the internet.

I think he should adopt a pit bull from a shelter. If a pit bull can live in the white house then people might change thier views on them. They are wonderful dogs and mine just LOVES my 5 year old cousin. She was abused as a puppy and arrived at the animal shetler with cigarette burns on her body. He needs to do his part and showing this country that there is no bad breeds just bad ownders.

Why should it be obvious--not all people love dogs. I have two, beautiful shelter dogs, but I wouldn't advise anyone who thinks that they're unnecessary and an expense to even think of having one. It takes a lot of commitment to get up on those cold mornings to take them out, but I wouldn't trade that for all the money in Fort Knox when they cuddle up to me.

I am a dachshund lover and many of them were recently(August) rescued from a puppy mill in West Virginia. I have gotten one of those pups and she is so much fun. He should go to drna.org and look at the rescued dachshunds and get one. They may be small but they have one hell of a bark and an even bigger bite.

                      Dear Taxpayer:

Having a dog has absolutely no negative effect on your personal life. As a matter of a fact, it has no effect on you at all, in the slightest bit. Would having a dog affect the way you do your job? Does it affect the way every other dog owner in the United States... more... The WORLD, does their jobs? No. There is absolutely no reason why you should even care one BIT about this. Not to mention, in case you haven't noticed... Obama isn't even in the Whitehouse yet, let alone having the weight of a country on his shoulders yet. So seriously, chill out. We're all taxpayers here. And mostly all citizens, barring inconsiderate selfish people such as yourself, we don't mind our president owning a dog.

I have said that they should get a pit bull and I still say that. Whatever they get I hope they do their research on the breed. Hopefully it is not a small dog. I love all dogs but small dogs can be hurt easier then a big dog. I have had boxers, rotts, hounds, pit bulls, chows, etc. before. I also worked at a no-kill shelter and have come across all breeds from chihuahuas and doxies to Newfoundlands and Pyraneesse. A newfie would also be a good choice. They should just go to and find what they want rather it be purebred or mutt. I myself love my mutts but they might perfer a purebreed. There are both mutts and purebreds in shelters all over.

I totally agree.  Also, however, it is important to pick not only a hypoallergenic dog, but one whose personality is amennable to some serious obedience training, as well as old enough not to be howling through the night for his or her mama.  And best they do it now, so they can all get acquainted before the kids have to get used to a new house with  new rules themselves.  Then the puppy can be a support to those girls, instead of just a media distraction.  Housebroken, too.

It's unbelievable how people judge just because of who someone voted for, which it's obvious who the person you just attacked for no reason at all voted for...
Maybe you disagree politically, but don't be a childish bastard and make an overall assumption of a person's integrity based on a username and innocent sentence suggested on the internet. Now what you replied to him/her? That calls for an bad assumption. Grow up.

Not to mention, J.McCain obviously voted for McCain, but was giving an honest, NON-JUDGEMENTAL response with not a hint of bitterness. I don't agree with his/her political stance, but I don't think it makes him/her a bad person for it.

I think a shih-tzu would be perfect--a rescue one, of course. It would not shed all over the Lincoln bedroom.

Seriously, I think the girls should get to pick their puppy.

Boston Terrier, hands down!  It is hypoallergenic, an American bred dog often referred to as The American Gentlemen, highly intelligent (like our new first family) and loves to play, is distinctive for its black and white markings (do I have to explain that one?), and is more loyal to human contact than to animals, something we desperately need from our leadership!  No need for any other comments on this post!  THIS IS THE DEFINING MOMENT FOR OUR FIRST FAMILY PET....BOSTON TERRIER!!!

Wow rider-83, why are you hating so much?  You sound like you may need some anger management.  I see no reason to eliminate beauty, music, the arts or having a loving pet in a world full of problems.  Perhaps you would do well to take a walk and reconnect with what is good and hopeful in the world before you blow a head gasket!  Trust me, as a lifelong minister and former chaplain in the military, it is crucial to find hope and love (even from one of God's little creatures) to help us through the maddening fray of hate and violence in the world.  Good luck to you!

I'm going to do a little experiment.  Ok, I'm gonna sit here for about 30 seconds....

Ok, time's up.  In that 30 seconds I tried my darndest to do something about the starving children all over the world, and our bankrupt government, and,... well... nothing I could really do, not in 30 seconds... BUT, I could have posted an interesting, entertaing post about the first doggie.  I probably could have done that in less than those 30 seconds, and adding a smile or two or three or four to other people reading this thread.

Point is, lighten up.  We've been griding election madness for months and months.  We all need a break, and to smile a little.  And, well, puppies and dogs make most people with a soul smile.  So rider, if you're not smiling at the thought of puppies, you might wanna get that soul or lack-thereof checked out.

Enough said, let the doggie talk continue!  I still say Basenji (love the hound family).

This is suppose to be a light hearted blog board, and some of you are going off topic about kids and people starving in other parts of the world. Granted those things have always happened since the beginning on time. Let's not blame Obama for the world problems. His daughters want a puppies.

I think they should get a labpoodle or a poodle, maybe they could save them from a puppy mill and shut them down by drawing attention we don't treat God's creatures that way. I personally like Corgis and Berense Mountain dogs.

i think it's sad how some people get upset over people who are trying to have a friendly convo.. and since its not anything bad, poeple get mad, that is why so many people in our country live in fear, because everything that is considered "worthy" to talk about or have an opinion on is something dangerous, or something bad of some sort.  Do people realize that almost every president has had a pet or pets or some sort?  WHy is it that Obama gets into the white house and suddenly having a pet doesn't matter and it will take away from Obama running the country?  I think people who are heated on this issue, are people that live thier life to complain.  These people arn't happy and can't be happy unless they show all the negatives and make a postive situation a negative one.. These people need help..

and Rider, to say that the US deserved the 9/11 attack is just wrong on so many levels.  DO you realize how many innocent lives were taken?  How is that justified by us being "ignorant"?  Obviously you are an ignorant person, so it would be ok if someone shot you or did something of that nature to you then rigtht?  I wish 9/11 didn't hapen like it did, I wish we had a large building like one of the twin towers, and we out all the ignorant, and cruel, unamerican, a$$holes like you in there and then we let a terorist take it down... Then maybe, just maybe we would have a great economy because we wouldn't have leaches like you sucking everything out of it.  As far a memorial if this version of 9/11 happened instead, there would be a huge sign saying THANKS Bin Laden, you just saved us a lot of heartache...

i hate stupid a$$holes that have nothing better in thier life but to make others miserable...

but on a lighter note, i believe the Obamas should get a heeler they attach well to children and adults, they have almost unlimited potential as far as family, work, and guarding. They have an excelent attitude but probably a blue heeler rather than a red heeler, red heelers have a tendancy to look meaner then they really are

I think the reason everyone is saying get a "Mutt" is because all of us feel that President Elect Obama now stands for being all Inclusive. A mutt would include a little of this and that. Which makes up our "United States of America". We now are focused on being that kind of nation. It realy makes us feel good that all voices can be heard. But all in all those precious daughters should seek and find a dog they fall in love with. That above all is want we want for his daughters. May God Bless our soon to be First Family.

Used to raise dogs back in the old days. Fox Terriers and German Shepards. We bred them for show and for other purchases. All in all A mutt called Sandy was the best dog we ever had. Mutts are cool. You can always find one at the shelters and I think the kids should go that route. Now the shysters are selling mixed breeds as some kind of new name and chrging 3500 bucks for them when in the old days they were mutts. Go figure.

Maybe the puppy cam people would donate one of those.

My opinion with the situations in America as they are we all need a light hearted moment or two now days. This one fits the bill.

Perfect for those with allergies and have a great personality. Just what is needing in the "first puppy" catagory.

While I don't particularly agree with the "little yippers" comment, I do think the Obamas should get a larger dog especially with young kids.  Kids like to carry little dogs around and the dogs could easily get hurt if dropped, especially Yorkies.  A bigger dog can handle the rough-housing.  Given the allergy issues, my vote would be for a Labradoodle.  The Labrador part is willing to do anything for you and the Poodle half is smart as a whip.  They are great dogs.  I have a Schnoodle (Schauzer/Poodle mix that I adopted), also "hypoallergenic" but not as big, about 22 lbs.

I do ask that the Obamas try to adopt a dog from a shelter.  There are lots of great dogs of all varieties and sizes in shelters.

Plott Hounds are excellent medium-sized dogs, very kind with children, and don't shed so much. They aren't "little yippers". They are extremely inteligent, and they are actually originated from AMERICA, which I think would be more appropriate. They were first bred to hunt down and kill bears, but this surely doesn't make them agressive at all. Zena, my Plott, is the best dog I think anyone could ever ask for. :)

There was an excellent discussion on our local NPR station this past week regarding this.  One of the daughters is actually allergic to dogs which presents a challenge.  Another part of that discussion was having a dog who could be comfortable around secret service, military personnel and perhaps the press corps, etc.

I also was allergic to animals many years ago but my ENT fixed this with a steroid spray.  Now I have 3 terriers and do hospice visitation with them as Therapy Dogs.  The treatment worked a miracle in my life.

I would like to see them consider a rescue BUT from military or police service.  This is a dog that would be extremely well trained, easy going around any secret service personnel, and protective of the first family as well.  With allergy treatment the daughter s/b able to be as close and cuddly as she would like with a very loving and retired service animal.

They're exremely intelligent, and easy to train, obediant, and very protective. But not so much as they'll attack any stranger. It takes a real threat. Extremely friendly to most people, however.

Maybe not by color, but color is based on geographical and etymological background. The chances that anyone in the United States, unless they're just off the boat from across the sea, being purely from one heritage almost none. So quit the racial cracks, cultured people don't discriminate anymore.

I'm very sure that the states of    Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho would love to share some of thier purebred, imported gray wolves with Washington D.C .
